Bucket List Cruises A Friendly Cruise story through the Panama Canal

logoBucket List Cruises A Friendly Cruise story through the Panama Canal.  The voyage was called a “Cerulean Celebration” Cruise From Miami, Florida, USA, to Caldera, Costa Rica November 19, 2014 voyage 4329

Friendly Cruises can now take this off our bucket list, “A Panama Canal Cruise” on Crystal Cruises.

We flew into Miami the night before we were to board the beautiful Serenity, Crystal Cruises newest ship. We booked our first night at the International Miami Airport right on the Concourse next to the American Airlines incoming flights. It was a late night and easy to get to hotel. We were able to walk right to the hotel after collecting our baggage. It wasn’t anything fancy but it was a place to lay our head for the night.

The next morning we went down to the baggage claim area and found the Crystal Cruises personnel holding up a Crystal sign. We left our luggage with them to deliver to our ship’s stateroom. Crystal Cruises’s representatives escorted us to our motor coach which took us and other passengers from the Miami airport to the ship. It was easy and quick to check-in at the pier and boarding was a breeze. The gracious stewards on the ship escorted us to our luxurious room. We left our carry-on luggage in our room and we went to lunch at the “Lido Restaurant”. The Lido was at the top of the ship and all the tables had a view of the port of Miami and beautiful Caribbean waters. Our preference was to take a table outside in the fresh sea air.

Food Crystal CruisesThe food was excellent on the Serenity throughout the voyage. There were so many choices of tasty fresh vegetables and fruits as well as exquisite choices of cooked dishes. If we didn’t see it on the menu we would ask and they would make it for us.

ACBLWe then explored the ship, discovered the show room where the nightly entertainment would be including the casino, library, card room where we knew we would be playing during our voyage on the ACBL duplicate bridge with an instructor. There were three specialty restaurants, one being Italian, Asian, and another called Tastes where we could go if we needed a change from our main restaurant. We found the movie theatre which had current movies playing twice daily. The Internet room, the spa and fitness rooms, the University at Sea which taught us the latest in digital filmmaking course for the iMovie for the IPad, then my husband spotted the golf area where the PGA professional would be talking about “sand play”.

ButlerCrystalCruisesAs the excitement built we went back to our Penthouse where we unpacked and put our things into the spacious walk-in closet with so many drawers and hangers. It was obvious we wouldn’t fill them all. What a nice luxurious room we had. We had wireless internet, we had a private balcony, the spacious bathroom with Jacuzzi tub and separate shower. A couch and chair sitting area and a big king size bed.

Our room steward came in and introduced herself and then the butler came in and introduced himself. The life of luxury. On this ship everything is paid upfront which means gratuities and internet service on this sailing were included. The liquor cabinet/refrigerator was stocked with our favorite liquor and soda pop which also was included in our price.

Our safety was taken very seriously and every passenger had to show up for the life boat drill or they came to find you.

It was beautiful pulling out of the pier of Miami seeing the city lights and music playing. We knew we could settle in quickly.

Our first stop was Key West, one of my favorite USA ports. We were docked very close to the main area actually in a naval base where the Navy Seals were being trained. The tram or trolley cars gave us complimentary shuttle services into the main part of town and told us the history of the area. Street performers were everywhere.

Entering Gaton Locks - PanamaThe other stops included Cozumel, Belize, Honduras, and Costa Rica. One of our favorite excursions was in Puerto Limon, Costa Rica which took us on a boat ride on the canals through the rainforest. What a site to see and hear the howler monkeys, the crocodile, the beautiful butterflies and birds. The iguanas were hard to pick out but our excellent guide from Crystal Cruises excursion company called Swiss Travel Company based in Costa Rica found them for us.

We must admit Crystal Cruises provided us with top notch vendors to take us around; the busses were good and the guides excellent. We know when traveling with Crystal Cruises we will be taken good care of while in their luxurious hands. Crystal Cruises is very dependable and reliable. They are excellent.

Freighter entering Locks, guided by mules - PanamaThe highlight of this voyage was going through the Panama Canal. We went from the Caribbean side to the Pacific side and it took about (8) hours. The mules that were connected to the ship were something to see and we learned about the good engineering and what was done when building the canal. We learned the history and experienced the whole route. Saw the beautiful landscape and knew we experienced it in the best way on Crystal Cruises.

Of course one of my highlights happened daily when I could play ACBL duplicate bridge with people from around the world. I call it an international game. Our Director was the well known E.B. and Sarah Dyer.

There was never a dull moment. We maintained exactly the schedule we wanted and are dreaming of another bucket list. A WORLD CRUISE!

Friendly Cruises honoring veterans posting their friends travel story on Veterans Day

CityofNewOrleansFriendly Cruises honoring veterans posting their friends travel story on Veterans Day.  Friendly Cruises is blessed to have so many friends cruising around the world.  A short story of one of our close friends on Veterans Day while on a cruise.

www.FriendlyCruises.com  is sending this out on Veterans Day, and to all our friends who have served:  “Thank You”.

We just spent (5) days in New Orleans and now are on a cruise in the Caribbean.  (Glad to have spell-check or I would have never spelled Caribbean correctly.)

BourbonIt was our first time in “Nawlins” (local pronunciation) and we saw it all, including Bourbon Street at 11pm on a Friday night.

We have been in Cabo, Cancun, Vegas, and many other party towns on a weekend night and nothing compares to Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

First the good – great music filled the street from the over-stuffed nightclubs and bars.

Now the bad – everyone on the street had a drink in their hand which they happily spilled on you as everyone jostled, inching along the overcrowded street in all directions.

New-Orleans-Bourbon-St-HThen, cheerful men on balconies pelted the crowd with beads hoping that women would lift their tops in the “Nawlins” tradition.  The crowd was so tightly packed that I do not think a women could raise her hands, let alone her top.

After the walk, Kerry said she she needed a (30) minute hot shower.  I said they should issue hazmat suits for everyone over 50 years old as you turn onto the street.  Best to leave this street to the youth on weekends. But we still enjoyed the different experience.

Earlier in the week we took a day tour of the entire New Orleans area, from the beautiful homes near the colleges— Tulane is one— to the Katrina 9th Ward.

According to our guide, in the Katrina flooded areas, Brad Pitt’s charity and other charities (I know the Mindel family and others came down to rebuild homes) built more houses than our Federal Government.  Much of the area is still vacant lots, but many of the new homes have solar panels provided by Pitt’s charity and the area looks like a better place to live.

Guess what the Number (1) visited attraction is in New Orleans

WWIIMuseumThe WWII museum nationalww2museum.org Bet you didn’t guess it. We went to a Tom Hanks 4D movie and then returned another night to their playhouse to see “The Rat Pack”, you know, with Sinatra, Martin, and Davis which was very good.

We also saw “NCIS New Orleans” filming a Christmas episode in the museum’s main hall.

WWIIDirectionsWhat I liked best was that at each event, they honored the WWII vets that were in attendance. Most of these WWII vets are either in their 90’s or close to it.  It is touching to see them stand tall or raise their head high from their wheel chairs, if they can no longer stand, to accept the applause and appreciation from the rest of us.

A shout out to my Dad, George, who is still going strong and served in WWII. By the way, he mowed his yard yesterday.  Love you, Dad.

Book a world cruise with Friendly Cruises and find a Chilean Penguin Adventure

Penguin chile#1

Book a world cruise with Friendly Cruises and find a Chilean Penguin Adventure.  Friendly cruises is honored and grateful to share the story of  MW’s Chilean adventure on a South American cruise.  As a cruise industry leader and Elite Cruise Counsellor Scholar ECCS www.FriendlyCruises.com strives to walk down the pier of luxury, adventure and creating lasting cruising memories.

It is said that, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” ~ Lao Tzu – Come make that step with Friendly Cruises and create your own journey.

The following short story and images of MW’s experience shares an adventure of a family of Penguins in Chile in a place called Puntas Arenas located at the southernmost part of Chile.  This is where the earth and sea come alive with thousands of happy feet bobbing up and down to a black and white beat.

To  MW:   Thank you for sharing your story, adventures and photos of your Chilean Penguin Visit in southern Chile while being on a South American cruise.

“To prepare for the Chilean penguin visit at Puntas Arenas, Chile, the Penguin chile#2entire ship watched the movie March of The Penguins. I would like to carefully recount for my friends and family the day of our Penguin Visit.

At sunrise the 2000 cruisers began to queue up in single file for their breakfast buffet.

At the same time the male penguins had left their burrows to catch breakfast for their chicks.

Next the 2000 cruisers formed a single line waiting to board the ship tenders to carry them to shore. One by one the cruisers carefully stepped onto the tenders in the gently rolling seas.

The chicks received their breakfast caught by their fathers, as their mothers spread their wings and turned their backs toward the sun warming themselves.

With patience, the cruisers filed off the tenders and waited in line for their buses to be loaded.

The penguins, warmed by the sun, began to tidy their burrows.

Bus after bus carrying the cruisers bounced along the gravel road for forty miles trailing a plume of dust. Finally arriving at the penguin area parking lot, the cruisers lined up to use the “banos” before the two mile walk to the penguins.

The penguins hearing the buses arrival prepared themselves for viewing.

With grit and determination, the cruisers, camera at the ready, walked a straight line along a plank trail toward the penguins.

Penguin chile#3With the cruisers on hand –SHOWTIME– the penguins ambled to the water’s edge and happily splashed in the sea and frolicked on the beach. Two thousand cruisers marched along happily snapping pictures every few feet and then lined up to begin the long march back to the boat.”

They take detailed notes of the subtle or obvious differences before recommending a specific cruise ship or cruise line.

Why reserve a Crystal Cruise? Why sail on the Crystal Symphony or the Crystal Serenity?

Crystal-Serenity-ExternalWhen Crystal Cruises was building their newest ship the Serenity, Crystal Cruises leaders took the finest things from their two existing ships and created the Serenity.

Time has allowed Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity to gain near perfection in their design and cruising experience. When cruise passengers step aboard these ships they see modern and classic views while experiencing an elegant fine cruise with many options.

S24381ACrystal Cruises is a six star company.  This is evidenced by the subtle behind the scene things that make the difference in creating luxury and comfort on board. The passenger capacity on the Crystal Serenity is 1070 and a crew number 655. This results in the guest to staff ratio of .61. This means there is a good number of staff
available to attend to each passenger’s need. On the Crystal Symphony those numbers are passenger capacity 922 for guest space ratio being 55.3 and guest staff ratio of .59 with its 566 crew on board. The stateroom size varies from 202 sq ft for an ocean view up to 1345 sq ft for a penthouse with veranda.

Besides the grand destinations to where their ships sail the on-board activities, entertainment, food, wine, spirits, spa, butler service, and casino excel on Crystal Cruises.

Crystal Cruises contracts with world-renowned experts and celebrities who while on board give riveting lectures covering topics such as destinations and cultures, world affairs, art, history, and other entertainment.  These enrichment lectures give passengers the opportunity to go home after their cruise feeling relaxed and well educated.

The best facilities at sea for games like duplicate bridge are on Crystal Cruises ships. Their spacious and comfortable theatre offers free popcorn while watching movies.

Ambassador Hosts are cultured, well traveled gentlemen who are on board to socialize, dance and bring life to each night of your cruise. Creative Learning Institute has educational classes in diverse subjects including digital film making, golf, dancing, bridge and other interesting topics.

Crystal Cruises stands out from other cruise lines with their all inclusive items such as specialty coffees in the Bistro, gratuities, wine, spirits and free internet program for past passengers.
